With just 80 so days left to the 2010 FIFA World Cup, “football fever” is starting to take over South Africa and what better way to celebrate it than to “kick start” the KIA Street Soccer programme.


PHASE 1 of KIA STREET SOCCER:
Health Education & Coaches Training Roadshow


Phase One of the Kia Soccer Street
, Health Educaiton and Coaches Road Show started in the community of Mitchell’s Plain in Cape Town with great success last week.

 

The road show has been divided into five legs as the Sporting Chance team travel round the country visiting the various KIA Street Soccer regions in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban and Cape Town.

 

PHASE 1 of the programme is made up of two components as follows: 

HEALTH EDUCATION PROGRAMME “HEALTH OF THE NATION” 

Duration: approximately 60 minutes For all KIA Street Soccer players and coaches

Sporting Chance, with the support of title sponsors KIA and associate sponsors Foodzone are hosting the KIA Street Soccer “Health of the Nation” sessions in the selected communities in the weeks leading up to the start of the KIA Street Soccer league.

 

In collaboration with the National Department of Health Promotions the key messaging for the sessions have been developed, with an “edutainment” program focusing on three core areas:

 

•Importance of being physically active: how to lead an active lifestyle to prevent obesity 

•Nutrition: what to eat and how to eat healthily, drink plenty of clean and safe water.

 

Thanks to health and hygiene product donations from the Dis-Chem foundation, the educational programme will include the distribution of items that promote the life skill and personal hygiene messages being taught. 

KIA STREET SOCCER COACHES TRAINING - in partnership with regional PSL clubs 

Duration: approximately 90 minutes For all KIA Street Soccer coaches

Sporting Chance, in collaboration with the regional PSL clubs and the KIA Street Soccer sponsors will be hosting the coaches training sessions with the community co-ordinators and coaches that will facilitate the KIA Street Soccer league.

 

These sessions will assist to create sustainability to the KIA Street Soccer project with the aim to leave behind intellectual soccer capital that the community coaches can implement during and post KIA Street Soccer.

 

The session includes two components: 

•General soccer coaches training - this will be conducted by the PSL club coaches and will give expert insight into coaching methods, etiquette, drills and further development. 

•Specific KIA Street Soccer training - this will include a thorough explanation of the KIA Street Soccer rules and the responsibilities of the coaches.

 

The 1st leg in Cape Town covering the communities of Khayelitsha, Mitchell’s Plain, Gugulethu, Athlone and Maneneberg were completed by Tuesday this past week. Special thanks to the AJAX Cape Town team of coaches for their valuable input.

 

Early Wednesday morning the team headed off to Pretoria for the 2nd leg where they were warmly welcomed by Shoshanguve community on Wednesday afternoon and Atteridgeville on Thursday.

 

On Friday the team ended in Orange Farm, Johannesburg where they worked with soccer legend Augusto Palacias from Orlando Pirates in training the coaches.
